We love books in our house and rarely a day goes by without me and the children taking some time to look through our favourite books. Although we use our local library a lot there is nothing nicer or more exciting than getting a brand new book to read - so we were very excited when "The Day The Crayons Quit" landed on our doormat for review.
This book is written by debut author Drew Daywalt and illustrated by an old favourite of ours Oliver Jeffers whose books my children have enjoyed since they were babies. These children's authors have teamed up to create a colourful solution to a crayon - based crisis!
The story is about a pack of crayons who have decided that it is time to quit their day jobs! Written in a series of extremely funny letters to their owner Duncan each colour takes a turn to tell him why they need a break. Beige is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown, Blue needs a break from colouring in water (he's down to a stump!) and there's a great discussion about what colour the sun really is (Orange thinks it's him but Yellow is convinced that he is in fact it's true colour).
The bright colours and humorous illustrations were really captivating and both my children were engaged with the story straight away. I always think the test of a really good children's book is whether adults can enjoy it too, and I certainly enjoyed the book as it was such a clever concept and the crayons letters sounded so real and authentic.
It was definitely a big hit with the kids who requested lots of re-readings and it was a lovely way to get talking about different colours and also about the different feelings evoked by each crayon in their letters to Duncan.
