Last weekend we took the children for a day out to the summer festival at Heartwood Forest. This beautiful woodland situated in Sandridge (nr St Albans and Harpenden) is the largest new native forest in England spanning 858 acres of land. It's a wonderful place and we only found out about it via a friend so I thought I would share it on my blog as it is definitely worth a visit!
As well as enjoying the festival where there was facepainting, survival skills and storytelling we went for a ramble through the magical woodland where there are plenty of dens to explore and trees to climb. The children had a great time sword fighting with sticks and making a see-saw out of an old log!
Parts of the woodland date back to 1600 AD and there are new woodland and wildflower fields being planted all the time. In fact you can get involved in the planting yourself too. Heartwood Forest run tree planting events in November, December and March where volunteers can help plant the forest. We are definitely going to do this with the children as its a great way to teach them about nature and to feel that we have made a lasting impact on our local environment.
