Bonfire Night Crafts For Children

 

Well I'm sure that Guy Fawkes was not really thinking of kids crafts and cupcakes when he put together his infamous plot but I think fireworks night is a great time to get children interested in some colourful bonfire night crafts. Here are a few ideas for some crafts that you can do with your children to celebrate the 5th of November.


Firework Surprise Pictures

I love these as it's a really simple idea and very effective. First take a sheet of plain white card and cover it in multicoloured stripes or patchwork. You need to use wax crayons to do this. Then cover your paper with thick black poster paint. You may have to do a couple of layers to make sure that the colours don't show through. Of course you can do the first bit with your children but it's actually quite good fun to do it yourself first and then present them with a pieces of black paper. It's great seeing the look on their faces when they scratch through the paint and watch the multicoloured fireworks appear!

 

Bonfire Cupcakes

 

The children really loved making these and made sure they took lots of sneaky licks of the cake mix!

Ingredients:

for the cakes

100g self raising flour

100g caster sugar

2 eggs

100g butter

1tsp vanilla essense

for the decoration

200g cream cheese

icing sugar

green food dye

long chocolates like matchmakers or mikado for the bonfire logs

Sparkles or jelly tots for the flames and sparks

 

Mix all of the cake ingredients together and put into cupcake cases. Bake in the oven for approx 12 mins until golden. Meanwhile make up the icing base by mixing the cream cheese and icing sugar (tastes can differ as to how sweet you like the icing so keep adding a bit at a time until you like it!). Add some green food dye to represent the grass and layer on top of your cake.

Then it's time to build the bonfire! Pile up your broken up matchmakers so that they look like branches on a bonfire. Add in the sparkles to represent the flames and sparks and eat!

 

 



Glow In The Dark Sparkler Jewellery

 

I was very excited when I discovered the wonder of glow in the dark clay (mine came from a brand called Sculpy) and thought it would be great for fireworks night. Me and my daugther decided to use it to make some pretty jewellery that would mean we could be seen on a dark bonfire night!

 

Simply take the clay and roll it in your hands to soften it then roll it out to about 5mm think. Using a star cookie cutter cut out a star shape and put a hole in the top with a skewer or pencil. Bake in the oven for about 10 mins.

 

You then need to "charge" your star by holding it near a light for a few minutes. Thread some ribbon into the star and hey presto - you are a sparkling firework!
