Now we are getting closer to Winter it's very tempting to batten down the hatches and vow to stay inside in the warmth until the cold is over and Spring is here once more. However for those of you with gardens this is not an option! Your garden still needs you...even though it may look drab and dull there are still many ways to get the best out of your garden this Winter...
Help The Natural World
One way to enjoy your garden in Winter is to turn it into a temporary nature sanctuary for animals who may be feeling the icy chill. Piles of Autumn leaves can become a haven for hedgehogs and a fallen log provides a home for any number of minibeasts and flora. So don't be too quick to keep things neat and tidy as a slightly more unkempt Winter garden will really encourage wildlife into your backyard. Another important thing to do is to help feed the birds who struggle to find food and water when the ground hardens with frost. Put out homemade bird feeders regularly and you will be rewarded with some great birdwatching opportunities.
Keep Warm Outside
Another way to make sure that you still get use out of your garden is to beat the cold with a patio heater. These are widely available online at stores such as whitestores.co.uk. Using a patio heater means that you can still get some fresh air and enjoy the winter wonderland, sitting outside with a cup or tea or a warm glass of mulled wine. I love these cast iron chimineas which look beautiful as well as being practical. Why not host a winter party and encourage people outside to give you extra space!
Decorate Your Garden For Christmas
Outside Christmas decorations are starting to really take off in the UK. I always think it's lovely to see people making an effort to put Christmas lights on the outside of their house - they look magical and the children love seeing them. You can get some great ornaments ranging from subtle fairly lights to life size models of Santa and all his reindeer. I think this cute penguin would go down very well with my two little ones!
