Last weekend I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening of the newly refurbished Harriet Kelsall Jewellery Design Studio. Harriet has created a beautiful walk in jewellery design studio set on a working farm in rural Hertfordshire that is also very child friendly! The first thing you see is the jewellery inspired garden and water feature and my children were instantly captivated by this. Harriet is an award winning designer of bespoke jewellery and I love the fact that she takes so much of her inspiration from the natural world. All the plants in this quirky garden have labels showing an item of jewellery that has been inspired by them and this really intrigued both me and my daughter and was a great introduction to the studio
As you enter the design studio there is a lovely cafe which overlooks the goldsmiths workshop. This is great if you want to have a coffee whilst thinking about designs and gives the workshop a very relaxed and friendly feel. There is plenty of room to browse the fantastic designs and I also particularly liked the display which shows how Harriet is at the forefront of using ethically sourced stones. She was also one of the first jewellery to adopt Fairtrade and Fairmined gold - becoming the first independent and UK based company to receive certification by the Responsible Jewellery
Council.
I was lucky enough to have a chat to Harriet and when you speak to her you can really tell how passionate she is about her work and how much thought and care she puts into it. She has been making jewellery since the age of 5 and as a mother herself she is really keen to inspire children and teach them about jewellery design. There is a lovely kids beading area in her store and she plans to offer jewellery parties where children can come and have a look at her designs, learn a little bit about how jewellery is made and have a go at making some themselves. We were given a very cute bead making bauble and my daughter loved having a go at thinking up her own bespoke creations.
Harriet has made some amazing bespoke designs including an engagement ring based on an octopus for a couple who love scuba diving and a fantastic ring based on an allium flower. She has also designed the very pretty Purple Label Collection which offers dress jewellery at very affordable prices. I was really impressed by Harriet and the new store and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a special gift or even a treat to themselves. I'm currently working on my husband and will be planning a visit before my next birthday!
